NewYorkUpstate.com took a deep dive into some of the Empire State’s best burger joints and using data from Yelp, released the new report of eateries in the area that are the 31 best burger restaurants in upstate New York.
According to the report, factors that determine ranking include the number of reviews, star ranking, and number of negative reviews.”Best" is measured using an algorithm that looks at the number of reviews, star rating for a business, length of time a business has been opened, and other factors.
The number of negative (one or two-star) reviews are also a significant factor, and may give a restaurant with fewer total reviews a higher ranking than a restaurant with the same star rating and a higher number of reviews.
The report only includes restaurants from upstate - which is considered by the website to be areas north of Westchester and Rockland counties - in the rankings.
Hudson Valley restaurants to make the cut include:
- Meyer’s Olde Dutch Food & Such on Main Street in Beacon (third overall).
"We use only the finest ingredients including local food purveyors such as beef from the Hudson Valley, cheese from NY state and produce from local farmers – together with our family micro-farm in Hyde Park. Our full-service bar features a large selection of NY craft beer, locally produced wine and house-crafted cocktails," the restaurant's website states.
"In addition to beef burgers, the menu offers lamb, chicken and vegan options with multiple toppings and house-made signature sauces, plus hand-cut fries, sweet potato fritters and salads. All items will be available via counter service and served in open seating and a back open-air patio."
- Noshi’s Coney Island on Main Street in Poughkeepsie (fifth).
"This place is excellent," one Yelp reviewer posted. "I try to go regularly and have never been disappointed. I usually get a couple of chili (cheese) dogs, some wings, and either a gyro/burger/or (chicken) Caesar salad. The house sauce for the wings is out of this world. Reuben's are good. I can't say enough good things about this place. A tad pricey but worth it."
- Melzingah Tap House on Main Street in Beacon (sixth).
According to the restaurant's website, "Melzingah Tap House is an all-new gathering place for craft beer enthusiasts, cocktail connoisseurs, and food fanatics located in historic Beacon New York. Offering a fantastic twist on local cuisine, 23 taps of unique craft beer, and custom cocktails sure to delight. Whether you’re just visiting Beacon or call it home, we want to be your gathering place"
- Joe’s Dairy Bar & Grill on Route 82 in Hopewell Junction (12th).
The restaurant owners said their "JDB Monster Burger - double bacon cheeseburger stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches instead of a bun - has become a local cult classic.
- Bun’s Burgers on Garden Street in Rhinebeck (16th).
"Our philosophy is to prove that you can have a burger and fries while still maintaining a healthy lifestyle," the owners said. "Local farmers, like the Kilcoyne family, help us in our mission to receive the freshest ingredients possible. We're committed to providing a delicious grass-fed beef burger, hand-cut fries and locally-sourced milk and ice cream from Boice’s Dairy and Adirondack Creamery for our milkshakes."
- The Matchbox Cafe on Route 9 in Rhinebeck (22nd).
"The glorious bounty of the lush Hudson Valley provides us with all the fresh grass fed, grain finished beef, all the free range chickens, and the exciting array of seasonally available vegetables that everyone craves. That is how we came to create our splendid MATCHBOXveggiBURGER. A wonderful, extremely substantial mixture of spinach, zucchini, potato and onion that is collecting fans by the minute! We serve it at The Matchbox."
